Galtres Festival will find out on Monday evening if it has won a UK festival award, at a glittering awards ceremony at London's Roundhouse.

The eighth annual festival, which took place at Crayke over the August Bank Holiday weekend, was nominated for no less than six national awards, and has been shortlisted for one. The judges were particularly impressed by the 'Dragons and Knights' theme this year, which included live jousting tournaments, a medieval village, a Knight School and Chinese dragon dance.

Festival director James Houston said: "We're thrilled to have been shortlisted and to be joining the big national festivals for the awards. It's a testament to the hundreds of people who work so hard to make Galtres such a brilliant festival. This year's event was particularly spectacular, and I'm proud to have been part of an festival which so many people really enjoy."

As well as the family entertainments, the festival features five music stages which featured 100 bands over the weekend, with headliners including Ash, The Buzzcocks, Billy Bragg, Adam Ant, Seth Lakeman, Ocean Colour Scene and the Guillemots.  Supports included the Littlemores, the Travelling Band, Ellen & the Escapades, Chris Helme and Hope & Social.

And there was comedy, cabaret and theatre, with the York Modern Mystery Plays featuring prominently in the programme. The merriment is aided by the fabulous beer and cider festival, with more than 100 different local ales, lagers and ciders to choose from. And some very good local food catering.

Mary Passeri, who organises the family festival programme, commended all the storytellers and family entertainers: "They put on such a brilliant show for the youngsters. We really deserve this award. York is so lucky to have such a brilliant, safe, friendly festival right on its doorstep!"
