Bearded Theory have today confirmed that the closing headliner for this year's festival is UB40, the phenomenally successful UK reggae band featuring founder members Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue.
UB40 sold more than 100 million records and registered more than 50 singles in the UK charts on their route to global domination. Next month will see the 35th anniversary of their first ever gig, now marked with a PRS For Music commemorative plaque at the Hare & Hounds in their hometown, Birmingham.
In a statement, the trio said: “The three founding members have reformed and reunited to bring you the true sound of UB40,” and revealed: “Ali, Astro and Mickey are currently in the studio working on a new album.”
Bearded Theory Festival director Steve Blount says: “As soon as we knew that Ali, Astro and Mickey were available to bring the hits of UB40 to our audience, we were absolutely determined to secure this amazing booking.”
Bearded Theory, named Best Small Festival at the UK Festival Awards 2013, takes place from May 22-25 at a new location, Catton Hall in South Derbyshire.
UB40 join a fantastic line-up which includes Friday night headliner Carter USM, Peter Hook & The Light, Pop Will Eat Itself, Oysterband, Dreadzone, Hayseed Dixie, Fishbone, Dub Pistols, The Orb Sound System and many more. A further headline act is yet to be announced.
The move to Catton Hall means Bearded Theory can take full advantage of a four-day event. Music starts on Thursday May 22 including an appearance from Dr & The Medics, and continuing through the Bank Holiday weekend until late on Sunday 25.
Tickets are now on general sale, with the price of a family ticket cheaper than it was in 2013, from www.beardedtheory.com and from Tourist Information Centres in Derby, Burton on Trent, Nottingham and Tamworth.
A payment plan is available to spread the cost and – representing even further value for money – Bearded Theory remains one of a dwindling number of festivals where the audience can take their own drink into the concert areas.
