With a record 500 track submissions from emerging North East artists, extra venues have been taken over to squeeze in as much regional talent as possible.

This year’s event, which kicks off the Evolution Festival weekend in style on Saturday 25th May, will be headlined by four artists who have gone on to achieve success since playing previous Emerging events: Let’s Buy Happiness, Nadine Shah, Shields and B>E>A>K>.

Since playing Evolution Emerging 2010, Let’s Buy Happiness have played Glastonbury, been all over the UK’s media and will release their debut album this year after returning from SXSW in Texas and Canadian Music Week. Fellow 2010 artist Nadine Shah recently signed to R&S Records following the success of debut EP ‘Aching Bones’. B>E>A>K> have become one of the region’s most exciting live bands since playing the very first Emerging event in 2009. Latest single ‘Night Owls’ was Lauren Laverne’s MPFree on BBC 6Music. And Shields (formerly Pilots) will co-headline the Cluny having played Evolution Emerging 2011.

The Cluny lineup is completed by London band Eliza and the Bear, Sunderland’s Child and Newcastle band Blank Maps. Nadine Shah will be joined at the Cluny 2 by Tessera Skies, Faith Elliot, Micky Moran Parker and Agerskow.

Ross Millard (The Futureheads) side-project Rivals support B>E>A>K> at The Tyne Bar alongside O’Messy Life and Teesside bands Goy Boy McIlroy and By Toutatis. Sunderland is well represented at The Cumberland Arms with former Chased By Wolves frontman Richard Smith and This Little Bird joined by South Shields’ Arbeia and Middlesbrough’s Abel Raise the Cain.

Following daytime Radio 1 love and a slot on Generator’s stage at Evolution Festival last year, Big Beat Bronson headline the Star & Shadow Cinema. They’ll be joined by North East Hip Hop favourite Ken Masters and two new bands signed to Tiny Lights -Lionhall and Tissue Culture. And NME favourite Alex Butler will play alongside Glishy Weather, Palace and Lisbon at The Tanners.

New and intimate venues Blast Studios, Heart Attack & Vine and Blank Studios will play host to very special sets throughout the night. Artists confirmed include 16 year old Hip Hop prodigy Terra T, Glishy Weather, Sam Wright, Alex Dobson, Dressed Like Wolves, Suntrap, 3200 Tigers, WavesWavesWaves, O’Messy Life (special stripped back set) and some secret special guests.

The official Evolution Emerging Aftershow will once again be taking place at Star & Shadow Cinema, this time from 10.30pm-3am, with a live set from Dedmoon & Diagrams and DJ sets from the likes of Preqwal, TRIPTIK DJs, DIONYSUS, DR. JEKYL & MR. JIVE, HNDRSN and WHIP YOUR HAIR.

And new for 2013, Generator and Evolution Festival will be selecting one artist from Evolution Emerging to open the mainstage at the festival. Details of how you can have your say will be announced shortly and one lucky artist will join The Vaccines, Paloma Faith, Rudimental, Jake Bugg, Bastille, Aluna George and many more on the Spillers Wharf Stage. Full weekend tickets for Evolution are available now from www.evolutionfestival.co.uk.

The full Evolution Emerging line-up can be seen below and is available at www.generator.org.uk/evolutionemerging where more updates and details of our special guests will be announced.

Joe Frankland, Artist Development Manager at Generator says:

“Evolution Emerging is always the highlight of the North East gig calendar. We were blown away by the number of submissions we had this year and felt we just had to make our event bigger and better. So we’ll also be taking over Blast Studios, Heart Attack & Vine and Blank Studios so we can put on over 40 artists across 9 venues.”

“For Evolution Emerging have played a part in the success of North East artists nationally means a lot to us so we’re thrilled to be inviting artists from previous events to headline this year’s event. And with an Aftershow until 3AM, we can’t wait to cram so much talent into one free event!”
