Live From Jodrell Bank is delighted to announce a very special performance by the Hallé on Saturday 31 August, Stephen Bell will conduct a concert inspired by the stars, including Jupiter and Mars from Holst's The Planets. The Halle will also perform classics from Strauss, Mozart and John Williams, as well as a selection of out-of-this-world film music from blockbusters such as: Star Wars, Independence Day, E.T., Apollo 13, Close Encounters and more.

The concert will also give participants a very special opportunity to celebrate the life and work of the late Sir Bernard Lovell, Founder and first Director of the Jodrell Bank Observatory. Sir Bernard, who passed away in 2012, would have celebrated his 100th birthday on the day of the concert.

Teresa Anderson, Director of the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre says :

‘Sir Bernard was a long-time supporter and follower of the Hallé, often travelling into Manchester from his home near Jodrell Bank to attend concerts. We know that he would be delighted in the conjunction of Science and Music that is taking place in the shadow of the telescope he created’.

Conductor Stephen Bell comments, “It will be a huge pleasure to conduct the magnificent Hallé in such a brilliant and unique setting as Jodrell Bank.  We'll play some of the most exciting music there is, and nothing beats hearing a world-class symphony orchestra playing at the top of their game. It will be an unforgettable evening!

Established in 1858 the Hallé is one of Britain's first professional symphony orchestras and now resides at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, where it presents over 70 concerts a year as well as playing 30 concerts around the country and abroad. The Hallé is one of the most sought after orchestras in the world with a reputation for artistic excellence and versatility, and under the musical directorship of Sir Mark Elder the orchestra has won eight major awards in the last five years.

Enhancing the convivial atmosphere at this stunning location will be a wide range of artisan food and drink. High end, bespoke picnic hampers will be available to order in advance courtesy of Just Picnics, the picnic company of choice for outdoor concerts, theatre and sporting occasions, and there will be many stalls selling organic and locally sourced products.  Pimms, Prosecco, fine wines and a selection of handpicked real ales will be available as well as teas and traditional lemonades.  Two VIP packages are available for those wishing to enhance their experience at this exceptional event.

Closing proceedings will be a dazzling firework display as the Jodrell Bank skyline is illuminated with colour.  This finale will be unmissable as the Lovell telescope transforms into a spectacular backdrop for the final time in the 2013 Live From Jodrell Bank series.

This performance will mark the end of another season of transcendent music from Jodrell Bank with three other shows also taking place. In July The Australian Pink Floyd will perform ‘A celebration of the 40th anniversary of The Dark Side of The Moon followed by a one off event curated by seminal Manchester act New Order supported by the likes of Johnny Marr and The Whip.  The show preceding the Hallé will be headlined by acclaimed Iceland post-rock act Sigur Rós
