The band behind Derbyshire’s The Big Session Festival swept the board at the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards on Wednesday night.

Oysterband (who are the founders and hosts of The Big Session Festival) and singer June Tabor jointly won awards for Best Group, Best Album and Best Traditional Track. June also won the Folk Singer of the Year award in her own right. June Tabor and Oysterband will headline at the festival which takes place at Catton Hall near Burton-on-Trent on 15, 16 and 17 June 2012.

Emerging young Derbyshire singer/songwriter Lucy Ward won the Horizon Award, for the breakthrough artist of the year and she joins the bill as a kind of “Artist in Residence” performing on all three days as well as hosting one of the stages.

"We are really delighted for June and Oysterband," says Joe Heap, co-organiser of Big Session Festival. "Not only do they richly deserve the accolades but their success is a reminder that the band's Big Session Festival will feature the very best of contemporary music. Oysterband see the event as the perfect platform to give fans of great music a real midsummer treat"

John Jones, lead singer with Oysterband and festival Co-Director said “What an amazing night, we have still not come down. Roll-on the Big Session, it should be quite a party this summer”

Oysterband will play two sets, a “request” set on Friday voted for by the fans and then on Sunday night a show with June Tabor celebrating the multi award winning album Ragged Kingdom. The band will be around all weekend as hosts, joining other artists and playing in sessions as well as a very exciting finale on Sunday with another of the festival headliners Show Of Hands.
