A further two further stageshave been revealed for this years Stockton Calling on Saturday 19th April, featuring Seahorses hero Chris Helme and up and coming Glaswegian act Baby Strange.
19 more acts have been announced, for The Sun Inn and The Vault, from an overall line up that will feature 68 artists throughout the day playing across venues in Stockton Town Centre.
Promoters Grass Route return to curate The Sun Inn stage after an incredible debut in 2013 which saw the venue operating a one in, one out system from the doors opening due to demand.
Grass Route pride themselves in bringing the best in up and coming bands to Teesside and their stage reflects that perfectly, especially headliner Baby Strange, who have been selected to play BBC Radio 1s Big Weekend in May and launched the event on Nick Grimshaw’s Breakfast Show in early February.
The stage is packed full of acts who have been garnering support from music legends. Indie pop band The Lost Boys have received huge support from Paul Weller, Teessider Alistair Sheerin has been labeled a genius by The Enemy front man Tom Clarke and Alan McGee of Creation Records has called IC1’s the ‘must see new band’ of the moment.
Liverpool foursome Reva are creating Britpop that sounds like it’s been catapulted through the last five decades and they’ve selling out every venue in Liverpool, including the o2.
As with all the stages Teesside talent is well represented in the shape of indie post-punk quintet Cellar Door, electro-indie floor fillers Be Quiet. Shout Loud!, exuberant rockers Violet Deep and the still to be announced 4Play Competition Winner, who will be the champion of the local battle of the bands.
Leon Pape of Grass Route said, "We are honored to be part of Stockton Calling for the second year running. It’s plain to see the quality and reputation of the festival is growing year by year and the announcements made already back this up.”
“As fans of every Stockton Calling to date we are looking forward to this one more than any other. We are confident that our stage offers everything and is our strongest line-up to date."
Over at The Vault, which has been programmed by Stockton promoters Nouvelle Musique, singer/songwriter Chris Helme heads the line up.
Helme was the front man of John Squire’s post-Stone Roses outfit The Seahorses, who were famous for hits Love is The Law and Blinded By The Sun. The masterful lyricist, musician and performers overwhelming back catalogue is further bolstered by his acclaimed work with The Yards.
Colourful, energetic & foot stomping act Coco and the Butterfields, who previously wowed crowds with their ‘Fip Fok’ brand of music that combines beat-boxing and rapping over fiery folk-inspired music.
Rag-tag four piece The Alice Charmers, who sound like they’ve been raised in the Deep South rather than the North East, psych rockers Silver Trees, ‘Alternative Folk Electro Death Jazz’ band Dinnernanny, easy listening trio Little Mirrors, laid back acoustic goodness from The Big Heave and Foals-esque Tusk offer a diverse range of genres in the underground venue.
Flying solo on the day is the gravelly voiced Sam Fender, who has had support slots for Ben Howard and Luke Sital-Singh, and pop-fuelled tunesmith Andy Jones, who is sans his band The Norton Rockets for the day.
Matt Speight, of Nouvelle Musique, commented, “It’s a great pleasure to return to The Vault, for what promise to be the best Stockton Calling yet. We’re really excited about our line up and what it brings to the festival.”
With this latest announcement it leaves just ARC, The Georgian Theatre and The Storytellers to reveal the rest of their line-ups.
Announced so far is Young Rebel Set, who will headline ARC; Female of the Species hit makers Space top the bill at KU and Public Service Broadcasting will finish the day off at The Georgian Theatre.
The Green Room and The H.M Bark Endeavour will feature a plethora of North East talent including Rivals, Collectors Club, Weird Shapes, The Approved, Algiers, and Suntrapp, to name just a few.
The venue-spanning event has sold out for the last three years in a row so advanced booking is highly recommended. Tickets for the event are on sale now and are £15 in advance.
Festival organisers also announced this week that an act from each stage will perform a free in store session at Sound It Out Record Store, starting on Saturday 22nd February.
