Seasick Steve at Strummer of Love 2012

On Friday 17th August Strummer of Love Festival opened with a string of brilliant performances from classic and contemporary artists headlined by Seasick Steve who closed the first day in spectacular fashion. Bringing his unique style and homemade instruments, he gave the assembled fans a night to remember.

Seasick said: “Well now, I bought my first Clash record many years ago. Years before some of you were born. I heartily respect the man’s belief and vision. I gotta say it’s a real honour and privilege to headline the opening night of Strummer of Love. Thank you Joe!”

Other memorable performances on the Friday included an epic opening of the Clash City Rockers stage as Frank Turner launched the festival. Other acts included folk protest legend Billy Bragg, working class rockers Reverend and the Makers and eccentric and soulful hip-hop crew Man Like Me who got the crowd going in true Strummerville style.

The Johnny Appleseed tent saw a headline performance by Mr C, who finished up the first day of fun whilst British songwriter Josh Kumra and rock and roll whirlwind The Jim Jones Revue added outstanding sets in the fields of Somerset.

On the same stage, Joe Strummer’s daughter Lola produced a captivating performance with her band Dark Moon whilst the assembled masses at The Campfire Stage revelled in a wondrous set from Lyza Jane. The family ties didn’t end there as another of Strummer’s daughters, Jazz, curated her Handmade Hangout creative craft tent, as Joe’s beloved campfire burned long into the night.

Strummer of Love, a one-off festival to commemorate the late great Joe Strummer, is taking place in the Blackdown Hills – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – in Somerset.

In honour of Strummer’s world views proceeds from the festival will benefit the work of Strummerville: The Joe Strummer New Music Foundation, which was set up in the singer’s memory by his friends and family following his untimely death
