Rugby Music Festival has turned to the latest new community crowdfunding site, Yimby.com (short for Yes In My Back Yard) and is seeking pledges to help fund part of the costs of the event, which is ticketless and free to enter.
The festival organisers have committed to delivering RMF2014 free of charge to anyone who would like to come along on the day. 24 acts are playing across two stages and none of them are taking a fee, the whole event is community based and not-for-profit.
Sponsorship is expected to cover a large proportion of the event costs, together with income from catering concessions and stallholders. However this year the event has moved to a bigger site and costs are much higher than previously. The organisers believe that crowdfunding could be part of the solution. With crowdfunding, the public are asked to pledge a small financial contribution – this from many people leads to genuine community support for an event or project.
“It’s unusual, we know, for a music festival to turn to this type of funding. However RMF is entirely by and for Rugby’s community so it feels right”, said David Head, lead organiser of the festival. “We hope to raise £5,000 using the Yimby site – all for things that are difficult to get sponsored, for example the cost of marshals, first aid cover, insurance, fencing and toilets! It might not be very rock and roll but a music event of this size can’t happen without these things”
