RECON, a festival of experimental and innovative music, film and art, takes place at the end of September in Leeds and Bradford. The second wave of acts and activity have been announced with Ghanaian kologo player King Ayisoba, the North East’s greatest avant-folk troubadour Richard Dawson, Nirvana-collaborating cellist Lori Goldston, Blast First-endorsed aggro-beat trio Blood Sport, Nottingham’s ambient un-rockers Kogumaza, Scottish folk artist James Yorkston, legendary punk poet Attila the Stockbroker and dub pioneers Iration Steppas amongst those who will join Sunn O)))’s Stephen O’Malley, David Thomas Broughton, Blixa Bargeld, Juxtavoices and Ashtray Navigations as part of the extended, multi-venue festival.
Also featured in this edition will be an exhibition and screening of films by celebrated Indian documentary filmmaker Anand Patwardhan at the University of Bradford’s Gallery II, and a collaboration between noise-rockers That Fucking Tank and artist Yvonne Carmichael for an event that promises to exist at the crossroads of a Silent Disco, underground gig, sound installation and movement-based participative performance. Artist films that treat pop music as found material will be the focus of a programme put together by The Illuminated Room including works by Kenneth Anger, Pipilotti Rist, and Derek Jarman.
‘This year’s festival is shaping up to be even more packed than last years’ says Andy Abbott, one of the directors and Fellow in Music at University of Bradford. ‘We’re really lucky to have so much good stuff being done by good people in the region that we can draw upon for RECON and I hope people will treat the festival as an opportunity to take risks on art and music that they might find challenging or unfamiliar. It’s definitely a broad and diverse programme!’
Grants from both Arts Council England and Leeds Inspired have allowed to commission new works, events and collaborations. The first of these, Frozen Music - a collaboration between artists and musicians that uses the real-time scanning of performers brains to melt and morph the architecture of Leeds Art Gallery - will kick off the festival on 18th September at 8pm.
RECON festival takes place at multiple venues across Leeds and Bradford including Howard Assembly Room, Brudenell Social Club, Delius Arts and Cultural Centre, Wharf Chambers Co-operative Club, Hyde Park Picture House, The 1 in 12 Club, Victoria Gardens, Gallery II (University of Bradford), Fuse Art Space, Leeds West Indian Centre and The Tetley between 18th and 19th September.
