Having already announced the likes of AlunaGeorge, Daughter, Sinkane, TEEN and Jah Wobble & The Modern Jazz Ensemble for the 13th edition of Motel Mozaïque, we are pleased to announce the next string of names. Motel Mozaique is a 36-hour festival that takes place across several venues in Rotterdam on the first weekend of April.
Each year, Motel Mozaïque offers a mix of pop, dance and alternative music alongside theatre and visual arts. Approximately 80 acts, performers and artists will form 2013’s line up playing at 6 venues in the city centre of Rotterdam. The total capacity of the festival is 3,500 and only ‘All Day’ tickets are valid for the 2 night event.
Motel Mozaïque kicks off at 4pm on Friday 5th April and will finish in the early hours of Sunday 7th April, two evenings plus an extended day programme. The heart of the festival is Schouwburgplein which is turned into a small, intimate square (Plaza Mozaïque) where the festival programme, refreshments and architecture come together. Alongside this, the festival takes places within several indoor locations in the centre of Rotterdam creating an ongoing festival.
New additions for 2013 include Matthew E White who released his critically acclaimed debut album last month through Domino Records as well as Singer-songwriter John Grant, formerly of The Czars.
Joining them in Rotterdam are the 4AD signed British band Stornoway whose sophomore album will be released imminently and Manuncian’s soulful chanteuse Josephine. Tipped by Pitchfork and Foals amongst others, Australian’s Jagwar MA has also been confirmed alongside another 4AD act inc.
Fresh from his debut live show earlier this year, London’s S O H N will be playing the festival, as well as Wild Belle, Night Works, Nick Mulvey, Lapalux and Irish newcomers The Strypes. Broeder Dieleman, Torre Florim, Roos Rebergen, The Veils, Norway’s Young Dreams, The Milk Carton Kids and a Sinkane DJ set have also been confirmed.
On the performing arts side of the festival, Bryony Kimmings’s 7 Day Drunk show will be transferred to Motel Mozaique for the weekend. Lauded by Time Out, Evening Standard and The Guardian, she has previously performed the show at London’s Soho Theatre and the Edinburgh Festival. Mapije Fun Design will be creating the installation K’bout at this year’s festival – only accessible for gnomes and Télésync will be transforming the large screen in Schouwburg into a window and a mirror at the same time. With his resignation as Poet Laureate, Ramsey Nasr leaves a special project behind. Under the direction of his younger brother, Shariff Nasr, the poet combines twenty-one classic Dutch poems with image.

Festival punters are also given the opportunity to take part in Motel Mozaïque’s Sleeping Project which enables you to spend the night in Rotterdam in a playful and exciting way. Remarkable locations within the city are specially designed into a real motel, where guests can enjoy a night’s rest plus breakfast. Past locations include a church, tree huts, shop windows, a construction site and for last year, the roof of a national monument. Artist collectives handle breakfast - last year 200 people had a huge breakfast in the middle of Rotterdam’s largest shopping street – and appropriate entertainment: a lullaby to send you to sleep or a wakeup call from people in candyfloss balls, ready for you to take a bite from.
Motel Mozaique have acquired Rotterdam’s concert hall de Doelen for this year’s Sleeping Project, located in the Schouwburgplein – the heart of the festival – punters will be staying on the first floor of this venue that plays host to more than 1,200 events annually. The festival’s main venue Rotterdamse Schouwburg is also conveniently situated on the other side of the same square. Tickets for 2013’s Sleeping Project are available to purchase separately from your festival ticket as numbers are strictly limited.
The festival prides itself on its hospitality and throughout the daytime, there are 35 festival guides ready to share their favourite spots around Rotterdam with punters. This initiative came about from enthusiastic visitors, designers, art & cultural students and other people with heart for Rotterdam and Motel Mozaïque.
Motel Mozaïque distinctive programme showcases new and upcoming movements in different art disciplines. With its unique option to stay over in specifically designed location and superb warmth from locals, the festival is a great way to discover Rotterdam.
Last year, Motel Mozaïque had its first public broadcast on the main national TV channel in the Netherlands; the one hour show featured Patrick Watson live and was watched by over 200,000 people. Past line ups at the festival include TV on the Radio, The Black Lips, Deerhoof, Liars, Roots Manuva, Battles, Benga, Peaches, 2ManyDJs, Belle & Sebastien, Femi Kuti, Green Velvet, The Shins, Animal Collective and many others.
