As part of their esteemed Culture programming this year, Liverpool City Council is organising a series of events to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Cunard Line's first transatlantic passenger crossing from their spiritual home, Liverpool.
One of the events included under this umbrella is Liverpool International Music Festival's (LIMF) ‘Routes Jukebox’. This carefully curated project will centre around a flagship live event curated by Grammy-winning producer Steve Levine, with performances from Terri Walker, The Hummingbirds and Natalie McCool, plus an all-star band made-up of Ian Prowse (Amsterdam/Pele), Steve White (The Style Council/The Who), Billy Kinsley (The Merseybeats/Liverpool Express) and Jez Wing (Echo & The Bunnymen).
Alongside this, there will be a documentary filmed by esteemed videographer Mark McNulty, which will unveil the untold story of what music and cultures influenced Liverpool, its music scene and the direct links with other key music cities. The documentary, which begins filming this week, will touch on the music of Merseybeat, Jazz, Motown, Rock N Roll, R & B, Reggae and House music, and will see LIMF music curator Yaw Owusu, videographer Mark McNulty and producers Jernice Easthope and Bec Greenwood visit key cities to understand more clearly these special sounds and cultures that made Liverpool the greatest music city in the world.
Yaw Owusu, LIMF Music Curator comments, "Routes Jukebox is, for me, the most important project we have as part of LIMF 2015, as it looks at the roots and routes of the music and sounds that have brought Liverpool to its storied height within the music world. Both elements - the live event and the documentary - are entertaining, educational and ultimately a celebration."
LIMF is an inherently different festival representing the latest chapter of an ever-evolving global music city. Presenting its most ambitious and vibrant programme to date, Liverpool welcomes artists, creatives and music-lovers for a celebration like no other and one not to be missed. The five-day programme will encompass Commissions, Partnerships and the grand finale, LIMF Summer Jam, and will take place over several iconic Liverpool venues including Sefton Park. The programme will continue to cement Liverpool International Music Festival as the must-visit musical event of the summer.
