Official statement from organisers
In light of the extreme weather conditions caused by hurricane Bertha, Boardmasters Festival at Watergate Bay has been cancelled. The international surf competition will be going ahead at the Fistral Beach site, as planned.
Our guests, staff and performers' safety is our main concern and we have decided that the magnitude of the conditions is too severe for the arena site to be opened.
We deeply regret the disappointment caused to festivalgoers on the final day of Boardmasters 2014.
Customers are advised to visit www.boardmasters.co.uk for refund information.
The final day of the Boardmasters surf competition down at Fistral Beach was truly an international affair. Although the Watergate Bay site was regrettably closed due to the extreme weather conditions caused by Hurricane Bertha, the waves rolled in at Fistral for the finals of the Men’s Open, SunGod Women’s Open and the Davidoff Cool Water Longboard Pro.
Thanks to a Supermoon that is expected to light up the skies over Britain this evening, the tide reached a high of 7.3 ft, which brought with it big and challenging conditions. Perfect for a day of thrilling surf competition.
Surf commentator Nick Williams takes us through today’s highlights from the surf at Fistral Beach:
“Our final day of Boardmasters 2014 has come to a close. Today started with super tough conditions on the low tide with the surfers way out, we needed every pair of eyes from the judges tent to identify every surfer in the line-up. Nevertheless we got through three divisions today, the Davidoff Cool Water Longboard Pro, Sungod Womens Open and the Mens Open. Ultimately with the tide filling in during the day, conditions were a little bit more predictable and we once again saw a fully packed beach with capacity crowds. Despite one shower that came in of the ocean, today went pretty flawlessly".
First to our Longboard Pro division where European champ Ben Skinner schooled all other competitors with an incredible aerial right in the short breaks and some extreme tight radical carves. It was amazing to see and I think everyone was blown away with the crowd roaring and clapping.
The Women’s division saw the favourite and defending champion, Keshia Eyre, run away with the competition in the end with a well-deserved win.
The Men’s Open was awesome! The stage was set for something untouchable in terms of an all international affair as we watched both goofy footed Aussies, Jock Barnes and Noah Lane compete. We had Alan Stokes cheered as he came out the water from the home crowd taking 2nd place and former champion Romain Cloitre take 4th place. Jock Barnes was flawless throughout the event with super strong and super solid runs to take the win.”
