Organisers have today announced that Eliza Carthy and Saul Rose will be headlining the FRUIT stage at this year’s Hull Folk Festival on Saturday 31st August. The ticketed event is due to open at 7.30pm with Eliza and Saul taking to the stage at 9.15pm.

Hull Folk Festival is the first in the city to be purely focused on folk music and will celebrate folk culture, its traditional values and varied styles, on our doorstep and from around the world, with events for all the family. Event organisers are delighted to have secured an internationally renowned folk musician that hails from the city as the centrepiece to this year’s event.

Twice nominated for the prestigious Nationwide Mercury Music Prize and winner of more than five BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Eliza has been all over the world, toured with various artists and best of all, has found time to be a mother of two.

Family has always been important to Eliza, with her roots set firmly in Hull; acclaimed folk singers Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy are her parents, so what more would you expect – Hull through and through.

On her return, Eliza said: “It’s great to be coming back home. My mum and dad still live here and as a city, Hull is going from strength to strength. To play at any festival is always a pleasure, but to come home and do one in my hometown is going to be something special and I can’t wait.”

Joined by Saul Rose on stage, the performance will be sure to bring back memories for folk music fans. Saul has been on the road with Eliza for years, with their first collaboration in the band Kings of Calicut that would lead to Saul being a part of the successful band Waterson:Carthy, again collaborating with Eliza and her mother and father.

The two-day festival, which is funded by Hull City Council, takes place on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st August in and around the Humber Street, Hull Marina and Victoria Pier area. Both days will be filled with music, workshops and entertainment for the whole family, while also welcoming Hull’s first ever ‘green’ stage.

Hull Folk Festival 2013 takes place at Various Locations, Hull, East Yorkshire between Fri 30th to Sat 31st August 2013

The Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Terry Geraghty, said: “To get Eliza on-board is a huge honour for us. Her whole family have a strong history in Hull and what we wanted to promote was local talent; you can’t get much more local and talented than Eliza when it comes to folk music.”

You can catch Eliza and Saul on the Wayward Big Band Tour for three summer festivals to help celebrate Eliza’s 21st year in the music industry.
