Festival competitions aim to attract guitarists of the future
Amid a stellar line-up of established international artists, the Edinburgh Guitar & Music Festival has created a performance platform for young guitarists with the staging of two competitions. Students aged 11-18 are invited to submit a video or audio clip of a solo performance that will be judged by a panel. From the entries, finalists will be selected to perform live at a special event held during the Festival in the Baron Suite of the Edinburgh Corn Exchange on Sunday 26th May 2013.
The Junior category is open to 11-14 year olds, while the Senior category is for guitarists aged 15-18. This second category is sponsored by leading Edinburgh reseller and Festival partner Red Dog Music.
The initial stage of the competition focuses on the festival organisers’ video website where entrants can submit their videos and audio clips. They are also encouraged to share their performances via the Festival’s social media (if eligible). Performances can feature any musical style and any type of guitar. Those chosen for the final will be informed during March 2013 and will have the option of performing solo, or with a live backing band.
Three prizes will be awarded in each category: a 1st prize of gear worth £1750.00, a 2nd prize of gear worth £750.00 and a 3rd prize of gear worth £500.00. Schools that have endorsed the entries of winning students will also receive a gear cash voucher.
Guitar teachers whose students are selected to perform in the final will be offered free stand space in the exhibition area during the Festival.
