The 2014 festival will take place on 14, 15 and 16 February next year and the theme is to be “movement”. A new logo has also been released to promote the first three-day Coastival festival since 2011. The programme is still being put together but will include music, dance, theatre and activities for young people.

One event that is already pencilled in for the weekend is Orpheus the Mariner, a huge performance, at numerous Scarborough locations, featuring giant puppets and including a record attempt for the largest puppet in the world. It is being put together by Lee Threadgold and Dawn Dyson-Threadgold of Animated Objects Theatre Company.

Coastival events are staged by Scarborough-based arts development agency Create. Its director, Wendy Holroyd, said: “We are really excited to be able to stage another three-day festival in 2014.“We had a fantastic response to the one-day events this year and last but people always say: ‘when will you be having the three-day event again?’ so we are pleased it’s back for 2014!

“Orpheus the Mariner will be something the town has never witnessed before and on a scale that will be breath-taking. It will attract people from all over this country and beyond. “That will be a fantastic part of Coastival 2014 and we will have lots more besides so watch this space for more news!”

A one-day Coastival this February attracted thousands of visitors to provide an out-of-season boost to the town.

Figures show that visitors to Coastival’s A Different View on 16th February were up on a similar one-day festival last year.

In total, there were 9,536 attendances for the 60 events staged during the day. It is estimated that this brought an instant economic boost of around £150,000 to the town.

It included headline act music icon Boy George, playing a DJ set at the Spa, video mapping on the side of the iconic Spa complex and music, entertainment, art exhibitions and installations and activities for children and young people.

Figures revealed that the direct economic impact – money actually spent - was £147,167 for Scarborough.

The continuing effect of that money spent through the economy – known as the induced economic impact – was £218,695 for the Scarborough local economy.

● In 2012 Create staged Coastival’s Rather Splendid Day Out, which featured 21 different events and performances. It attracted 3,108 attendees and brought an economic boost of £119,907 for Scarborough (induced economic impact £180,157).
