Yorkshire quartet The Chevin are quickly progressing to become one of Britain’s brightest new bands. Previously seen supporting White Lies, The Airborne Toxic Event and The Pigeon Detectives, as well as at a show stopping SXSW 2012 performance, The Chevin have enjoyed a marvellous build up to the release of their debut album. Performances on both The Late Show with David Letterman and Conan in recent weeks served to further shine a light on a band who have been featured by Q and The Sun in the recent months, stoking anticipation for the release Borderland on October 15th, via So Recordings.
Produced by Noah Shain (Skrillex, Fool’s Gold), ‘Borderland’ resonates with the soaring anthemic qualities and emotional depth that typifies the likes of early The Killers and Arcade Fire. Featuring vocalist Coyle Girelli’s dual stories of emotional and physical crashes, ‘Borderland’ demonstrates The Chevin’s ability to swerve between the defiant and the devastated.
‘Recorded in a ranch – once a location for drugs and arms running, now a studio packed with vintage gear – in the desert of El Paso, South Texas, ‘Borderland’ is rich with creative rock sonics, compelling emotional themes.
“The last few years has been a time of break-ups and I’ve had some close friends pass away as well as family,” says Girelli. “Melodically it’s quite uplifting, but the undertone is constantly sad. These songs, personally for me, were very therapeutic, and I hope for other people they are too.”
Named after a hill in their hometown of Otley, The Chevin were formed in 2010 and focussed their energies on perfecting their sound in rehearsal rather than embarking upon regular touring. They recorded a complete demo version of ‘Borderland’ at Girelli’s home studio, and used the results to entice management before self-funding the recording of the ‘Borderland’ album under Shain’s expert guidance.
Already making waves on both sides of the Atlantic, The Chevin have all the attributes needed to be the UK’s next international breakthrough band.
