Madness at the Roundhouse, Camden, iTunes Festival, 27 September

“Hey you, don't watch that, watch this. This is the heavy heavy monster sound. The nuttiest sound around! So if you've come in off the street, and you're beginning to feel the heat, well listen buster, you better start to move your feet to the rockiest rock- steady beat of Madness!”

And so it began.

Iconic is a clichéd word, but surely there are fewer bands to which it can be applied than Madness. From Suggs’s snappy suit to the swaying motion of the horn backline, their style is often replicated but never truly matched.

With a total gate receipt of precisely £0, the Roundhouse’s crowd collectively was caught up in one of those wonderful euphoric moments that you sometimes get at gigs. Grins all around. Massive, massive grins. Get your skanking shoes on!

The show lagged in energy a little for the tracks from their most recent albums, but then accelerated towards the end with a wham-bam-thank you-ma’am combo of House Of Fun - Baggy Trousers - Our House - It Must Be Love. No doubt about it – Camden still loves their hometown heroes and always will. Fezzes all around.
