King Krule @ Fred Perry SubSonic: Continuing their incredibly successful series of SubSonic shows, Fred Perry bring you the hottest acts via intimate sold-out shows. The most recent to perform was the much lauded King Krule.

King Krule is South East London’s rough jewel. A very talented young man, his unexpected deep and mournful baritone is disappointment and disillusionment personified. His first UK tour was a sell out and his status as ‘one to watch’ was cemented with an inclusion in the BBC’s Sound of 2013 poll. Global recognition has already started to spread, and this performance of 'Rock Bottom' shows why he's making such an impact.

Wilder- new edition from Teardrop explodes
Posted Tue 7th May 2013

Wilder was the second and final album by The Teardrop Explodes, originally released in November 1981 and a radical, post-punk classic that’s ripe for reappraisal. Ambitious, colourful and catchy and with more ideas at play than most groups could conjure up in a lifetime, like so many great albums, it simply confused people in its audacity.

At the start of the year, ‘Reward’ had given the Teardrops their only Top Ten hit but amidst all the publicity that always surrounded the group, Wilder reached only a disappointing 29 in the charts. The first extracted single ‘Passionate Friend’, despite two appearances on Top of the Pops, barely scraped into the Top 30. Within a year of Wilder’s release, the group had split up.

This new edition features the original album in all its glory, plus a second disc compiled and sequenced by Julian Cope containing all the related singles, b-sides and BBC radio sessions. Cope also provides a track by track while Dave Balfe, the Teardrops’ original keyboard player, foil and sometime nemesis to Cope, along with guitarist Troy Tate provide further notes; Balfe’s essay is a particularly honest and revealing account of the recording process.

Disc two is effectively an alternative version of the album, the BBC sessions presenting many key songs in a noticeably different form, closer to how the group used to play them live. One the eve of recording Wilder, bassist Alfie Agius and keyboard player Jeff Hammer (both of whom play on the radio sessions) were jettisoned, leaving only Cope, ever-faithful drummer Gary Dwyer and guitarist Tate. Dave Balfe then returned, whereupon he and Cope proceeded to rearrange virtually every song with a much greater emphasis on synths and experimentation, and with a far more downbeat complexion than the well-crafted psychedelic pop that was their trademark.

The radio sessions also include songs which didn’t make it on to the album; Cope’s take on John Cale’s ‘I’m Not The Loving Kind’ and the powerful ‘Screaming Secrets’, a live tour de force which the group never nailed in the studio. Cope would eventually record it for St Julian.

Disc two also rounds up the b-sides to the three singles taken from Wilder: the infectious ‘Passionate Friend’, the punchy, brass-led ‘Colours Fly Away’, and the exquisitely plaintive ‘Tiny Children’, plus the non-album single ‘You Disappear From View’, a last-ditch reversion to the ‘Reward’ formula, released in 1983 after the group had split up. It’s a rich and varied selection including the more challenging ‘Christ Vs Warhol’ and ‘Window Shopping For A New Crown Of Thorns’, the charming, atypical ‘Rachel Built A Steamboat’, ‘Suffocate’ (a re-recorded version of the song which only appeared on the US version of Kilimanjaro) and a full-on, live ‘Sleeping Gas’, recorded at Club Zoo.

Amidst the disbelief and surprise at Wilder’s poor showing, Club Zoo was an outrageously excess all areas six week stint at the tiny Pyramid Club in Liverpool featuring the Wilder line up of Cope, Balfe, Dwyer and Tate plus new bassist Ronnie Francois. Designed to break in the new band, it was more a dress rehearsal for the American tour that followed - a fraught, drug-fuelled disaster which saw the group unravel to a point from which they never really recovered.

Few groups promised as much as the Teardrop Explodes in those heady post-punk days, even fewer groups scaled the same dizzy creative heights. Wilder was their mountain top.

Mark Owen set to release new album and June tour dates announced
Posted Sun 5th May 2013

Mark Owen will release his fourth solo album entitled The Art Of Doing Nothing on 10th June via Polydor. It will be his most collaborative to date and his first since Take That reunited in 2006. It is, says Owen, an album about each everyone’s “massively significant, tiny little speck life”.

The record fills the gap where Owen was supposed to be putting his feet up. When Take That finished their record-breaking Progress tour in 2011, they agreed to take a break for a year. Except, contrary to his new record's title, Mark Owen isn't very good at doing nothing. He had to be doing something. So he sat in his garden and did some sketches for an animation, then some painting. When Ben Mark and Jamie Norton, his long-time songwriting partners turned up, what he's done for most of his life naturally became the focus. “I’ve been making songs for 20 years now and I don’t really know what else to do,” he says, “it’s my hobby and my day job all in one." Gradually, the trio's chats developed into a concept: The Art of Doing Nothing. It was a notion of creating by not forcing things, by just letting the moment take over.  “We didn’t think too hard about the songs,” says Mark. For the obsessive Owen, this was a new approach.

Travis video for new single - Where You Stand released on June 10th
Posted Wed 1st May 2013

Travis seal their comeback with a sublime new single ‘Where You Stand’, the title track from their seventh album, out August 19th. Released on their own relaunched label Red Telephone Box via Kobalt Label Services.

Driven by piano, acoustic guitar and Fran Healy’s incomparable voice, ‘Where You Stand’ is “the most emotional track on the record”, according to the band’s Andy Dunlop and extols the virtues of loyalty at all costs. It was co-written by Travis’s Dougie Payne, Fran Healy and London singer-songwriter Holly Partridge and was produced by Michael Ilbert (The Hives/The Cardigans/The Wannadies).

The song’s stoical tone is undercut by an unforgettable video of trademark Travis wit, as Fran Healy is intrepidly subjected to what Dougie laughingly calls “slapstick torture” – the result of a whole day spent shivering in a freezing cold Glasgow warehouse as he was pelted with “as many outrageous, messy things as possible.” It was both conceived and directed by Fran Healy and you can watch it here...

New date announced for Major Lazers new album
Posted Mon 29th April 2013

‘Major Lazer’s second album ‘Free The Universe’ has a new confirmed release date of April 15 via Because Music for the UK/EU.  You can pre-order the album from today and also grab the third single ‘Watch Out For This (Bumaye)’ which features famed dancehall artist Busy Signal, along with The Flexican & FS Green.

The group issued a statement on the postponement below:

"Our fans are the most important part of what makes Major Lazer what it is.  It is with that consideration that ‘Free The Universe’ will not be released this month as previously scheduled.  We never want to disappoint our supporters but circumstances out of our control have made us unable to keep the intended date.  For anyone disappointed, we are truly apologetic and we promise that this hiccup has only made what we have planned for the album stronger.  We tried extremely hard to keep the date but it was ultimately decided that rushing the album would have been unfair to you and everyone who worked so hard on it.  There will be information soon about the album pre-order and we are working with everyone to be able to deliver you a few songs prior to the release."

‘Watch Out For This (Bumaye)’ is free when you pre-order the album over at iTunes here.

M People's first album the acclaimed ‘Northern Soul’ was released in 1992 and was hailed as one of the best dance albums of that year and spun their first top 10 single ‘How Can I love You More’.  It wasn’t until the band’s line up was complete in 1993 with the addition of percussionist Shovell that M People went onto win a Brit Award and the prestigious Mercury Music Prize with their second album ‘Elegant Slumming’.

M People’s third album, 1994’s ‘Bizarre Fruit’ stayed in the UK chart for two and a half years and saw the band win another Brit Award. A few years later the band produced fourth album ‘Fresco’.
