BBC Radio 6 Music has announced the line-up for the 6 Music Festival By Day, which will take place on Tyneside between Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 February from 11am to 6pm. It will take place on the Saturday at venues in The Ouseburn area of Newcastle – Cluny 1, Cluny 2, The Cumberland Arms, and The Star And Shadow – and on the Sunday at The Boiler Room in the Stephenson Works Quarter of the city.

Registration is now open 10am on Tuesday 3 February and closes at 8pm on Sunday 8 February 2015 to apply for the free tickets to the 6 Music Festival By Day here.

Highlights include Lauren Laverne in conversation with Tyne and Wear born Bryan Ferry; Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn on their days of song-writing as Everything But The Girl, as solo artists, and now writing novels; plus interviews with artists performing in the night-time line-up, including Royal Blood, Hot Chip, and Tim Burgess. There’s also live music from Slaves, The Wytches, Fat White Family, Sleaford Mods, The Pop Group, and more; a dedicated folk venue with more music and hosting Kate Tempest and Eliza Carthy in conversation about their unique collaboration for the 6 Music Festival; a selection of films and documentaries curated by Don Letts; spoken word from Murray Lachlan Young and Dr John Cooper Clarke. Plus BBC Introducing will be hosting more live music with bands and artists from the North East and special guests.

Cluny 1

This former mill and whisky bottling plant will feature live performances from Girl Band, Slaves, Wave Pictures, Joanna Gruesome, Slug, The Wytches, Fat White Family and The Pop Group.

Cluny 2

This venue will host big names from the world of music and bands from the night-time gigs in conversation with 6 Music presenters: Tyne and Wear born Bryan Ferry will be speaking to Lauren Laverne; Hot Chip will be speaking to Nemone; and The Pop Group will be in conversation with Marc Riley. There will also be a discussion panel on making music in the North East with Maximo Park’s Paul Smith, Ross Millard of Futureheads and Frankie and The Heartstrings, Beth Jeans Houghton, Nadine Shah and Field Music’s David Brewis. And 6 Music’s Matt Everitt will be fronting two ‘The First Time With’ specials (his regular 6 music series) with Wire’s Colin Newman, and with Andy Gill from Gang of Four, chatting about their music firsts, memories, and inspirations.

The Cumberland Arms

6 Music and Radio 2 Folk Show presenter Mark Radcliffe will be hosting a day of folk at The Cumberland Arms, with performances from Marika Hackman, Songhoy Blues, Stornoway, Moulettes, Kings of the South Seas, 6 Music’s Tom Robinson and Gerry Diver. Plus Eliza Carthy and Kate Tempest will be talking about working together ahead of their special collaborative performance at the 6 Music Festival at The Sage, Gateshead on Saturday 21 February.

The Star And Shadow

The Star and Shadow will be the venue for 6 Music Festival By Day’s spoken word, comedy, and film, plus more conversation and music. Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn will be talking to Gideon Coe about their days of song-writing as Everything But The Girl and solo artists, and now writing novels. There will be spoken word from performances from poet Murray Lachlan Young and punk poet Dr John Cooper Clarke; a session of punk poetry conversation and performance; and music from Sleaford Mods.

6 Music’s Breakfast presenter Shaun Keaveny will be interviewed by Matt Everitt in a special ‘The First Time With’ interview; and in another session, Shaun will be talking to the audience about how to do stand up and speaking to the co-founder of Newcastle-based Viz magazine, Simon Donald, North East comedians Mike Milligan - the voice of Sid the Sexist - Kate Fox, Luke Benson, and Patrick Monahan. And 6 Music presenter Don Letts will be curating a selection of music films and documentaries. Plus there will be a not-to-be-missed pop quiz, hosted by Liz Kershaw with a panel - including presenter Chris Hawking - going head to head to test their music knowledge.

6 Music Festival By Day - Sunday 22 February at The Boiler Shop in the Stephenson Quarter

The Boiler Room

This one-time locomotives factory near the banks of the Tyne is the venue for Sunday’s 6 Music Festival By Day featuring live music - including BBC Introducing stage - interviews, discussion, plus a record fair.

There will be live music from Du Blonde featuring Beth Jeans Houghton – the singer, songwriter, musician and visual artist from Newcastle upon Tyne - plus live music from Wolf Alice, and from musician and comedian Beardyman who will create a whole album in just one hour, based on song title suggestions.

The BBC Introducing stage will host bands from the North East region - Shields, Tessera Skies, and Yellow Creatures, plus special guests Woman’s Hour, and Hyde and Beast (Dave Hyde of Futureheads and Neil Bassett from Golden Virgins).

There will be interviews with two of the big names from the 6 Music Festival’s evening line-up - Gaz Coombes in conversation with Steve Lamacq, and Cerys Matthews talking to Tim Burgess. Stuart Maconie will front a Northern Soul discussion with director of recent film Northern Soul, Elaine Constantine, along with Richard Searling, Ade Crosdale, and Paddy Grady. And Guy Garvey and King Creosote will be in conversation with Tom Robinson about the art of songwriting.

And last year’s record fair proved so popular with visitors that it’s returning once again, bringing together independent record shops from across the region and beyond, which together encompass the range of music broadcast on BBC Radio 6 Music.
