Southbank Centre have confirmed the latest names added to James Lavelle’s Meltdown. The opening night of Meltdown will kick off with a unique double-bill celebrating two masters of the turntable, when Grammy award-winning hip hop icon Grandmaster Flash is joined by Scratch Perverts for a special night in the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

 Copenhagen-based musician and producer Trentemøller brings his stunning soundscapes to Meltdown, creating a unique blend of Scandinavian electronica with his five-piece band. Performance artists Carnet de Voyage create a site specific work for the Queen Elizabeth Hall as support for Neneh Cherry, plus Tor Miller is announced as support for Mark Lanegan, who plays his only UK gig this year in European as a Meltdown exclusive.

Also announced more news on the UNKLE show. James Lavelle and Mara Carlyle present UNKLE: REDUX, a collaboration with the London Contemporary Orchestra, visual artists and musical collaborators from the past, present and future. Composer and cellist Philip Sheppard will open for UNKLE on the first night of the festival.

James Lavelle has added a host of DJs to his Meltdown line-up. Detroit DJ and producer Jeff Mills plays a headline show in the Royal Festival Hall, with support from A Guy Called Gerald. James Holden, founder of Bolder Community record label, will play a set in the Purcell Room. DJ sets will take place in the foyer spaces of the Southbank Centre every night of the festival, with the names to be revealed at the start of the festival.

This year, Meltdown takes over even more of Southbank Centre’s 21 acre site with sets taking place in the Production Arch of the Royal Festival Hall, 13th– 22nd June 2014.Rosie Lowe has been announced to join Glass Animals - who have recently signed to Paul Epworth’s label Wolf Tone – for exclusive set in this venue.

The creative output of James’ label will be celebrated at his Meltdown, in Urban Archaeology: 21 Years of Mo’Wax; a retrospective exhibition of the Mo’ Wax archive which has been devised with Southbank Centre uniquely for this year’s Meltdown. The exhibition will include tracks and record sleeves, previously unseen proofs and artwork, as well as unveiling the workings behind the label.

2014 sees Meltdown once again head to neighbouring BFI Southbank, with a selection of cinema curated by James Lavelle, whose own musical output is defined by a heightened cinematic sensibility. The programme will explore hip-hop and street culture through the work of influential directors Dick Fontaine and Charlie Ahearn, and will include the UK Premiere of Ahearn’s Jamel Shabazz Street Photographer. Also screening will be Dick Fontaine’s ground-breaking documentaries Beat This! A Hip-hop History and Bombin’, the latter of which will be followed by a Q&A with Lavelle and Fontaine; plus Ahearn’s now-legendary film Wild Style, which takes place in early 80s New York and centres around graffiti artist Zoroand. Lavelle’s passion for science fiction is also manifest, including an opportunity for BFI Members to see Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Lavelle’s long term artistic relationship with Jonathan Glazer is celebrated with another chance to see the director’s recent tour de force Under The Skin.

Over the past few months and during many sleepless nights I have been dreaming of a giant psychedelic jigsaw puzzle and trying to arrange all the pieces to create something eclectic, multicultural, unique and contemporary that joins the dots between artists who have strived to push the boundaries of the art of music – it’s finally come together.”
