Details of the next Scarborough Coastival arts festival have been unveiled. The festival will be called ‘Back in Time with Coastival’ and will have as its theme a celebration of Scarborough’s musical heritage. Some 54 events, 50 of them free will be staged across 13th and 14th February.

Centrepiece will be ‘Reverberation’ a special music event at the Spa on Friday 13th February which will celebrate Scarborough’s musical history with both live and DJ music, as well as an exhibition of memorabilia.

Then on the evening of Saturday 14th February, there will be ‘Timeless’, a welcome return for some of Coastival’s favourite musicians who have performed at previous Coastival events.

During the rest of the festival there will be a mix of music, dance, visual arts, exhibitions and activities for children and young people in Rollercoastival.

Last month Coastival announced that it had secured Arts Council funding to stage Coastival in 2016. In keeping with tradition, Coastival 2015 will be a ‘mini’ Coastival and the full three-day event will return in 2016.

Coastival’s organisers, Scarborough-based arts development agency Create, say Coastival 2015 will celebrate the past and also lay foundations for the future.

Director Wendy Holroyd said: “Scarborough has a very rich musical heritage, with venues like the Penthouse, the Stage Door, The Talbot and LT’s, as well as the Futurist, holding a special place in the hearts of local music lovers.

“We wanted the next Coastival to celebrate that history, whilst at the same time introducing new features which will keep the festival fresh and moving forward.”

Tickets for events that need them are on sale from Thursday 4th December via the website at www.coastival.com where visitors can also find full details of the festival. Copies of the festival programme will be available at Woodend, the Art Gallery and other venues in the next few days.

Plans for Coastival have received a boost thanks to a new, closer tie-up with Scarborough Spa and its management company, Sheffield International Venues. Create and the Spa have been working closely on the programme and venues for the 2015 festival.

Spa Manager Jo Ager said: “We are really pleased to be working with Create on Coastival 2015. Coastival has become a very popular fixture in the Scarborough arts scene and we look forward to building on the existing relationship we have with Create for the future success of this wonderful event.”

Create has got funding via the Arts Council’s Grants for the Arts, to secure the full, three-day Coastival for 2016.

In February this year, thousands flocked to the three-day Coastival 2014 event, which saw big crowds at more than 100 different events.

Biggest crowds gathered for Orpheus the Mariner, an epic two-part seafront street performance, featuring giant puppets. A film looking back at the success of Orpheus will be screened at the Spa Theatre at 6pm on Saturday 14th February, as part of Coastival 2015.
