A poignant and everlasting tribute to Grammy award-winning artist Amy Winehouse is to be installed in her spiritual home of Camden Town. Amy’s family will unveil the special tribute on what would have been the singer’s 31st birthday
The specially-commissioned statue, designed and sculpted by Scott Eaton and cast in bronze. The Stables Market is currently being regenerated by camdenmarket.com and as part of thenew era the statue will be at its heart, ensuring Amy’s fans are able to visit it whenever they want.
Mitch Winehouse says: “Amy was in love with Camden and it is the place her fans from all over the world associate her with. The family have always been keen to have a memorial for her in the place she loved the most, which will provide fans a place to visit and attract people to the area.”
The sculpture was planned to be located at Camden’s Roundhouse, however Amy’s family have subsequently decided that it should be positioned at the centre of Camden's everyday action. As a result, the proposed statue has been redesigned to suit the new location.
“The Roundhouse would have been great as Amy and the Foundation have a great affinity with the venue, but it would not always have been accessible for fans, we wanted people to be able to see it, touch and interact,” says Mitch,“Now Amy will oversee the comings and goings of her home town forever."
The statue of Amy Winehouse is funded by the Winehouse family and Camdenmarket.com, the parent company for the Stables Market in Camden Town.
To thank Camdenmarket.com for their help, Mitch Winehouse and his band will play a special gig at Gilgamesh tonight to celebrate the regeneration.
Set up in Amy’s name after her tragic passing in 2011, the Amy Winehouse Foundation works to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people. It also aims to support, inform and inspire vulnerable and disadvantaged young people to help them reach their full potential.
Operating across the country and abroad, the Foundation runs, and funds several projects in the Camden area, including the recently piloted 'Camden Music Works' in partnership with Camden Council and Westminster Kingsway College, a work experience programme providing placements for unemployed young people within the music industry.
Amy's nearby studio, is home to the 'Amy's Yard' project whichprovides talented young people the opportunity to take part in a 3-month accredited programme working one to one with a professional producer, while attending a series of master classes with industry professionals, helping them gain the skills and confidence to become self sustaining music artists.
A £30,000 grant to the Roundhouse supports their Roundhouse Radio programme for 3 years, providing access to training and opportunities for young people aged 16-25 from socio-economically and personally disadvantaged backgrounds.
